Teaching Ethos
I take a collaborative approach to teaching, encouraging my students to apply their skills, creativity, and knowledge to the classroom. I’m no “sage on a stage,” but someone who wants to foster a setting where students can learn, grow, and develop portable skills. As a professor, I am committed to transparency, inclusivity, collaborative learning, and a strength-based, growth mindset:
- I will do my best to explain why we are doing what we do in the class;
- I am committed to helping every student learn and grow in this class, regardless of background, experience, or skill levels.
- I strive to create opportunities for students to learn from and support each other.
- I support a strength-based (not deficit) approach to learning, encouraging us to value disparate forms of education and knowledge, rather than viewing any as lacking or inferior.
- I advocate for a growth mindset, in which we measure ourselves by what we have learned, not by a fixed standard of achievement.
